7 MWp On-Site Solar Plant for B2Gold’s Otjikoto Mine in Namibia

Caterpillar and Barloworld were selected to integrate a new 7 MWp solar PV plant at B2Gold's Otjikoto mine. The gold mine is located in Namibia: in the region of Otjozondjupa around 300 km north of Windhoek. So far, the mine fully relies on heavy fuel oil (HFO). The Cat dealer Barloworld is supplying EPC services for the project. Installation of the system is underway, completion of the project is expected for early 2018.

Rob Schueffner, Caterpillar’s Microgrid and Renewables Commercial Manager, adds: “There is a tremendous potential for hybrid and solar projects in Namibia and throughout Africa.  Access to a consistent, reliable source of power is essential for fueling industrial and economic progress, and the improved power output and affordability of hybrid and solar installations are helping to make up for grid shortfalls.”

Mitsui Backs OMC Power’s Microgrid Expansion to Africa with a USD9 Million Investment

OMC Power develops solar minigrids for telecom towers and rural villages in India. The new investment is targeted at building minigrids in East African countries, where 600,000 people lack access to the grid. In OMC’s concept, telecom towers are anchor tenants that guarantee reliable off-take for solar energy. In addition, local homes and business will have the chance to buy solar electricity. Last year, OMC already raised USD4.5 million from the Rockefeller Foundation to finance 100 minigrids in rural India.
